Concrete snow sheds protected the original route of the Central Pacific Railway across Donner Summit from frequent avalanches. This route was used from 1868 until 1993 when the Southern Pacific Railroad abandoned the 6.7 mile section of track over the summit and opened a new 10,322-foot tunnel running under Mt. Judah. Additional virtual-reality views of the old summit tunnels and snow sheds may be seen here.
